Stop Playing the Insurance Game: How to Push Back on Benefit Increases

Paula Fulghum • November 10, 2025

The insurance industry has turned renewals into a game—and it’s costing you.

Employees are typically a business’s largest expense.

This expense encompasses not only salary but also benefits.

I used to go with my dad to car lots. It was like a sport for him to buy a new car. We would sit for hours; he would threaten to walk out (sometimes we would) until they would go back and forth to finally agree.

The insurance industry reminds me of going to the car lot with my dad.

Once a year, the insurance carriers send a letter to business owners notifying them of a whopping price increase, and for 30 days, it’s a negotiation tactic.

Let’s start off at 30% to have the owner negotiate it with their agent back down to 10%—so the business feels good about saving 20% rather than spending 10% more than last year.

Or they keep it the same price but reduce benefits for the employees. Higher deductibles, certain medical services are excluded, etc.

Way to go! You got a deal!

Not really.

How Did We Allow this to Take Place?

Why have we let this become the standard process?

Do you increase your clients' fees 30% each year to then get them back down to 15% and act like you are doing your client a favor?

No. Most businesses can’t do that to their clients.

What’s the solution for clients facing employer benefits renewals this year?

Wise Up.

Don’t let an agency tell you that a 28% increase is normal.

It’s not.

Don’t let them tell you that you need to reduce benefits for your employees to make it better.

You don’t.

If your advisors tell you that high increases & reducing benefits is what you HAVE to do…

Then tell them you HAVE to find a new agent.

Advocate for yourself.

Advocate for your employees.

And find an agency that will advocate for all of you.
