HR Professionals are Human Too- By Briana Capps

The Reality Behind the Role

There's a perception that follows HR around.

That we're objective. Neutral. Somehow immune to the weight of the situations we handle every day.

And sure, part of that's true… the job genuinely does require consistency and professionalism. Nobody's arguing that.

But something important gets lost in that image.

We're human too.

What the role actually looks like

HR rarely gets called in when things are going well. We show up when there's an issue, a performance concern, a conversation nobody else wants to have. We're expected to gather the facts, stay neutral, protect confidentiality, and help figure out what comes next … all at the same time.

And we do. That's the job. That’s what we are here for.

But there's a weight to it that most people don't see.

The objectivity vs. empathy problem

This is probably the hardest tension to explain to someone outside the HR world.

You're supposed to be objective. But you're also supposed to be empathetic. And those two things genuinely are on opposite sides of the spectrum.

HR hears every side. We sit with perspectives that don't align, from people who all believe they're right. And even when a decision is grounded in facts and policy and consistency… that doesn't make it easy to deliver. Or easy to sit with afterward.

What it looks like behind the scenes

From the outside, HR can look pretty procedural. Forms, policies, processes.

Behind the scenes it's messier than that. It's navigating complicated dynamics between people who have to keep working together, at times side by side or close spaces. It's handling situations where there's no clean right answer. It's having conversations that are emotional on both sides… and being expected to be the calm one in the room regardless.

The confidentiality piece

This one's hard to explain too, because by its nature, we can't explain it.

There are times (well, most all the time) HR can't share the full picture. Can't defend a decision publicly or the “whys” behind it. Can't say what we know, even when saying it would help.

That's genuinely frustrating… for us, and often for the people on the other side of it. But, the people involved deserve that respect from us. We aren't TMZ for the workplace.

Why any of this matters

Recognizing the human side of HR doesn't change what the role is. It doesn't lower the bar or excuse anything.

But it does change the framing a little.

HR isn't some detached function operating above the fray. We're in the same workplace, dealing with the same environment, just from a different seat at the table.

The people doing this work are carrying a lot… conversations, decisions, situations that don't resolve cleanly, while still showing up professionally every single day, and most of the time with a smile on our face like nothing is bothering us. We have to compartmentalize more while still keeping our mental health in check, when most of our whole lives we have been told “its not good to compartmentalize”.

Because that's the job. And we are human too.
